Last week we did three gigs. Two shows with the Wedding Present: Glasgow, which being Glasgow was ace and Leeds O2 Academy which was ridiculous, huge, good. I had to ask the sound engineer how to get down off the stage. Opening that big door that says ‘STAGE’ on it in big letters and expecting to see 6 people but actually seeing 2000 is pretty mind-blowing. I instantly hypothetically pooed myself but still played the right notes on my recorder.

I introduced Clifford to Gedge, and vice versa. Neither seemed overwhelmed. WP gigs were both superb and made me deeply nostalgic and emotional for a time i don’t remember being alive in. Adam insulted Gedge 12 seconds after their show. I did a lot of Wedding Present dj-ing in the van aiming to educate my dim ignorant band.

Watch noise, see FACES & more FACES

The next night was NYE and TVEGC were in North Yorkshire, somehow ending the night playing an impromptu gig in the Maypole in Long Preston. My mum clapped and a kind farmer said we were so good we should make a CD one day. If you want to imagine the whole of VEGC dancing round a big maypole holding hands at midnight, do.

I had another nightmare about midgets getting real - this time Clifford stole my bass and ran up a hill. He refused to give it back until i gave him £120. I would have argued but he had a very tiny gun in his Asda duffle coat pocket.

Our first gig of 2012 is booked for Slovakia. We seem to be making waves in the East. Don’t know why that is, but it’s making me feel happy.

Reports From Russia and the Euro / Last Shows of 2011

So Russia was amazing. read about it here. Big deep sincere thanks to everyone involved. Highlights were playing an Art Gallery in St Petersburg, night trains, fights, Wasabi Vodka, Ladas, watching We Are The Physics twice in 24 hours, and snow. I saw a good review yesterday which translated as “I note only that the Moscow tour of the group, which occurred last week, was successful and, hopefully, will not last - “Victorian gentleman”, despite the presence of recall, the lady turned out to be slightly insane, but very nice”. I think that sums it up. See pictures

We’ll be finishing the year with a crash by playing The Garage, Glasgow and the O2 Academy, Leeds on 29/30th Dec with our friends the Wedding Present. These are huge venues and it will be exciting. We played with them when we were very young and pretty rubbish, i’m more than excited have to the chance to be playing again and be great.

We made it back from Europe, ending with the epic 22 hr journey from Switzerland to Oxford, pulling up 12 minutes before stage time in Audioscope festival, which due to a combination of delirium, quick rum and a nice smart crowd was one of my favourite shows. In Europe we played Switzerland, France, Belgium and Germany. Apologies for the poor reporting. It was good. They were the first shows with Heddwyn on viola / mandolin. We’ve just got the first demos back from project GYTS. Album is underway. See some videos filmed in Brussels of new works shortly on youtube.

There’s a musician In The Victorian English Gentlemens Club. On Friday 21st Oct at half past midnight we announced the arrival of Sir Heddwyn Davies to the band via his first gig with us at SWN Festival. Since April the four of us have been working on a new project, entitled: - GYTS -. Together we’ve written over an album’s worth of noise. We recorded demos of the first new tracks last week at Aerial Studio in deepest West Wales. Heddwyn plays viola and mandolin. He makes incredible noises and knows what the notes are called, it’s been an education. The songs are astounding. We can’t stop smiling. Weirdo ice cream van pop music. Dream Theatre played on saucepans ////// We’re 6 days in to the Winter Lake Swimmers European Tour. Switzerland, France and Belgium so far. Paris on Halloween was my favourite, it was racket smashed up on Gin. Though Switzerland did have astoundingly good Alps. We’re playing a lot of the brand new songs, and a lot of Bag of Meat. 6 days in, the van is a bin, I know everything about 3 other people’s bowel movements, and I genuinely mistook a band mate for a tramp in a supermarket yesterday ///// Swn was Clifford’s first gig with the band too. He was very quiet - possibly shy, possibly a bit hot as he had a duffle coat on. Him and Matilda are both having a good time on tour, Clifford lost one of his new white trainers in Luzern hanging from the lighting rig, but we’ve refastened his velcro tight. He met his human equivalent yesterday (See here) it genuinely scared the living hell out of me, they weigh the same amount, and Tom (human) had lots of affection for him. VEGC Vs AI /////// TVEGC are going to Russia, we really truly are. 25th / 26th of this month we play in Moscow and St Petersburg. The thought of one day playing in Russia was the only reason I joined this band in the first place. We’ll probably die there, so it’s all rounded off well. We’re massively looking forward to it, and genuinely, for the the third time in this blog, astounded ///// We’re heading to Amsterdam shortly for drugs, girls, chips and a gig.

All the Europe dates have arrived in the mail: sixteen dates in Switzerland, France and Germany to support the new record officially coming out across the Chunnel. See Here to track our day by day route. All the best places, Berlin, Paris, Hamburg and Geneva. Especially excited about Switzerland for our four favourite things: lake swimming, modernist typography, Juniper berries and snow. We leave in 33 days which isn’t long to prepare: build a crucifix and get a 1970’s fireman helmet, glow in the dark paint, a new front tyre and a male Piss Midget. And remember how to play for longer than 34 minutes. For the second time we’re going to be playing Paris for Halloween which means for the second time, us dressing up and France refusing to embrace the concept. Go on France, get involved. The last show is in Olten, the following day we play Oxford for the Audioscope Festival, which should be brilliant, if slightly delirious. They have good taste. Buy a ticket now. On the tour we’re going to be playing brand new songs we’ve been writing since we finished our masterpiece, Bag of Meat. It’s instrumentally different to anything we’ve done before. (but fear not faithful followers, still no synths). SWN is soon and we play on the Friday at late o’clock at Dempsey’s. There’s no one else playing then so you have zero choice but to come. Should be a good one. We’re also playing at Norwich Arts Centre in 2 weeks. Amazing venue, though slightly marred by cold memories of accidentally smashing our own windscreen last time we played there. I just got a text asking if we’d be interested in playing a Russian micro tour. More news as/if it breaks. (I said yes). We’re heading out to record some demos soon in a different studio in a remote welsh field. I’ve been listening to our last record far too much, almost sad how much pleasure it gives me.

We have a new single, listen to it, buy it, read about it. A Double A side - ‘As Jungle Drums Rang Across the Amazon we Held our Heads and Screamed’ is “a pop song that’s been through one of those old-fashioned shaky exercise machines”. ‘Richer Than My Tribe’ is the first TVEGC song with rhyming in it. It’s a combined title length of sixty characters not including spaces. I hear it playing on the radio a lot, which is exciting. There’s no video, sorry - but you can look at this picture for three minutes and thiry four seconds, if that’s what turns you on. It’s Adam’s visual representation of Richer than my Tribe. We’ve been playing a few shows, including one with Shonen Knife on Sunday which was one of our favouritists gigs. It was great, I liked the Ramones covers. (theirs not ours). We have of a couple of shows coming up in the Western territores, and we’ll have some new dates in Europe ready to announce before too long. Please could you buy a couple more tapes or something as we’d like to record the next record in New York, but it costs a lot to buy an aeroplane. There’s quite exciting things happening in vegden, but I can’t tell you any of them. We’re writing. Leave us alone now.

Oh God, Don’t Bite my Knees

We have a new single coming out, it’s a Jungle themed double A side, from the new record. The first has a long title and there’s not much room here so i won’t write it. No, I better had actually - “As Jungle Drums Rang Loud Across the Amazon We held our heads and Screamed” and the AA is “Richer Than My Tribe”. It’s out on 11th August.

Even though the new record is only just out, we’ve been new writing songs. Last night I was singing “Oh God, Don’t Bite my Knees” along with adam - I asked why he’d written about God biting his knees. “Dog, not God. D.O.G.” Much more logical. There’s another song called ‘I Make Love Like a Child’. Sadly that’s not misheard, that really is the title.

We have a new studio and we’ve been building things in it. It’s a really exciting place and there’s quite a lot of yellow objects in it already. Adam is the best at building things, James is the fastest at building things and I have a new jumper with an Alsatian on it.

If you haven’t already, buy the new record. A lot of people have said it’s ace (thanks), and we agree. It’s the best thing we’ve done, and possibly the best thing anyone’s ever done. Buy it here. Or here

Back from a hot and rioty trip to Athens, playing the Flexi Disc release show with The Callas. Lots of awards being given in words we didn’t know and plenty of ouzo and VHS. We were an over excited shambles, but the noise seemed to work anyway. It’s still ridiculous to play so far from home to people who know the words to our songs. Then we went Greek island hopping for 3 days, climbed mountains and swam to urchin fuelled lands. Went looking for Leonard Cohen on Hydra (which apparently has no cars, just goats - but we saw a car three times - the same one, but still). Big thanks to Lakis, Aris, Anda, Irini & Dimitri - you’re excellent humans.

The records been out for 378 hours. Thanks to you people for buying it and writing nice words and observations about it. “Adam Taylor yelps about bananas” is my favourite. No, actually my favourite thing is “this album is worth your time”. That’s good. Do buy it, it feels nice. The cardboard’s shiny but not too much.

Overwhelmed about the interest in Blood Pie, the tape released last month. A track from it even got played on Radio One which is a bit ironic/funny

The new record is out today, this morning, now. The first qualifying notes came to be on a cold March morning of last year, and 15 months later it’s here, in your hand, under your pillow, screaming, bloody, and shrink wrapped. A little bit of sick still in it’s tiny mouth. We’re immensely proud of every gram of it.

You can get it in all the big places and little places but you’ll get it fastest and cheapest straight from the label…here…. or from us, here if you so wish.

If you’ve bought it or will buy it - thank you, really - everyone involved really does appreciate it, especially us. Reviews so far have been pretty astoundingly nice - but we wouldn’t have the cheek to offer this to you if it wasn’t astoundingly good. buy buy buy

The release party in London on sat was a stormer: big thanks for coming if you did. We’re off to Athens in two days for the Flexi disc launch. What a good way to live.

* Apparently the ecoli wasn’t in bean sprouts - it was Spotify all along, so steer clear for a week or two, or till you’ve have chance to buy the record instead.

We’re releasing a Flexi Disc Record on Monday. It’s the title track from the album, Bag of Meat, also out on Monday. It comes with a complimentary threepenny coin, in case of skip-age. It’s a split release with The Callas, from Greece. We’re playing release shows in a warehouse in London, on Saturday (info), and in Athens, the following week. Both shows are free, with films screenings and art and good DJ’s. A Flexi Disc is something we’ve wanted to create since the day we started the band, so we’re more than a little bit pleased with ourselves.

We played the Cardiff Album launch show last night at the Norwegian Church by the sea. I sold the first ever copy of the record. (And some others). It was bright and wholesome, a beautiful evening in all the right places. Thomas Truax was astoundingly brilliant, he has a ridiculous mind. Make sure you watch him at some point in your life. Big thanks to all comers.

TOUR REPORT, DAYS ONE TO FIVE

TOUR REPORT, DAYS ONE TO FIVE: Cardiff: Cinema was great - mormon cartoons and amputee fetishes. We’d like to do a whole tour with a cinema, it’s a great thing. London was intense, like a sunday school for bad children. It sounded good, and Arrows of Love and Catcher Nine were both amazing. Good bands all round - the next night in Leicester we had Produckty and Echolounge, who were both fucking great. I like the intensity of northern accents going on as we crawl further up the country. And i like getting a better collection of CDs for the van, reducing the chances of having Adam’s solitary Love CD forced on us another time.

“Adam, why do you like touring?” “I like having no routine, not knowing what day it is, being out of reality, severing connections with home. But I don’t like how bad my jeans smell, especially after last night in leeds. It was hotter than hell. The shows are getting better every night, more intense. It’s getting less atonal, more c-tonal”

“James, best night so far: discuss” Staying in an abandoned mansion in the midlands for two nights, sleeping a meter apart even though there were 8 bedrooms, because we were scared of ghosts. We went to the bathroom together. We should go back there for eight months and make a terrible prog record. There are a lot of foxes in Leicester.

Best song request was for ‘Bored in Shelton’ - which is a much better tittle for a song. Now we’re driving to Glasgow to play the Stag and Dagger festival - In 4 hours time we play at the Captains Rest.
So we’re going on Tour. It starts on Tuesday in Cardiff, with something quite special: A Club Foot Foot Cinema Screening, by our resident video director Casey Raymond. If you haven’t been to one before, there will be much cheap camera action, rudeness, and with free popcorn. And we play too. Then it’s London, Leicester, Leeds, Glasgow, Sunderland, Nottingham. We’ll have fresh supplies of Blood Pie, our new tape of demos.

Brand New: Blood Pie. It’s a yellow cassette of 16 demos, preparations, unreleased songs, durge remixes and strange things - non of which are available anywhere else. 16 songs, 40 mins. We recorded these songs ourselves in a kitchen at low volume as not to upset the neighbours. In the studio we make things loud and aggressive, but listening back we realised that there’s something very nice about the restraint in these recordings. There’s also some songs that weren’t right for the album, but couldn’t abandon. Altogether it’s a good introduction of how this record came to be. It comes with an MP3 download for two 20 minute mp3s: Side A / Side B. We’re releasing it now as it’s exactly a month until the album’s release - Bag of Meat, 13th June. see tracklisting / BUY IT HERE

A friend tried to compliment us last night us by telling us that when he heard our new single on the radio he thought there were two songs going at the same time. I think we have created a new genre. The Lexington show was great last night. We played nearly all of the new record - their first real airing. It was great to play with our brains raging playing new stuff.

There are lots of things happening soon, so we’ll summarise in nine handy bullet points:
- The new album is coming out on 6th June 2011
- It’s called BAG OF MEAT.
- The first single is out on 25th April, which is in two weeks time at time of writing.
- It’s about beheading
- It’s high pitched.
- You can watch / hear it here, by pressing this word
- We’re touring the UK in May.
- Voluntary Butler Scheme has just been confirmed as tour support for the whole tour.
- More news, including that of retro / ironic formats, coming soon. Watch these pixels.

So we’re going on tour again soon with a band we love, Archie Bronson Outfit. We’re going to Germany, France, UK, and ......Greece. I can’t wait, I mean i ‘really’ can’t wait. Make sure you come.

New songs are going well. Been at the studio today. what happened today….. A harmonica solo (me)...some mild rock-rap (adam), a few reggae beats (james) and some good tall volumes (collective). We played our ex favourite song for fun (Parrot) and it sounded 4% as good as the news ones. Recording again in a couple of weeks. Bear with us while we finish the whole thing - you know how strongly we feel about the traditional album structure/format.

Today I tried get someone to make us Flexi-discs for the tour. It’d be even better if we could get them made out of used Russian x-rays like on the recent Radio 4 documentary. I’ll keep you posted on my progress there.

So we have a brand new song for you, a gift. Listen to it, keep it, save it in a box for winter. It has a long title inspired by a book I read in Shropshire called The Cruel Sea.

We’re playing shows this week in York, Manchester, Bristol, and Exeter. We’re playing new songs, the best we’ve ever written, and sounding better than we ever have.

Germany was full of black beer, hot drives and cold lakes. Cheese and bread. Bruises, blood and poo.

When I was a small boy I thought every signed band was rich and that tours across the water were the stuff of dreams. I soon discovered i’ll be poor forever, but touring is the stuff of dreams. I get to play music which is mainly nonsense and caters to 8 people’s taste (3 of which play in the band), and I get to go to Europe, (well Germany, and France a bit and Sweden once, but mainly Germany), get fed and given more gin and beer than I can make go in me.

The new songs we’re playing are louder and weirder than ever, they will give us the commercial power of a super hero fox resuscitator with a sidekick daddy longlegs with legs too long to feed itself that dies in the first comic (and even fox resuscitator can’t save)

Come and enjoy us - or at least do what I do at gigs and stand at the back and look grumpy then don’t buy any records or tell the band I thought that they were really any good. The British way, the best way. We’re not promising any commitment that we can’t follow up. So what if we don’t come back again - I never rocked my head back and forth like a idiot at a gig and then shouted drunk into anybodies ear, that’s the way, so come along and join the weird world of us.

See you this week in England. Adam

We’ve been in the studio, recording for the third album and so far have 4 songs completed. This week we made cold hearted, bass heavy music with drums, lungs, guitars, bass, an electric mandolin, an Indian Shruti Harmonium, a VEGC-made Bow-Screamo (a single stringed instrument played with a bow), a church bell hit with a hammer and the sound of a coin being tossed. Inbetween we’ve been listening to Liars, Grinderman, 154 by Wire, Deerhoof, Cardiacs and Flowers of Romance by PiL. One of the new songs will be released as a single in June on This is Fake DIY Records.
We’ve stripped the band back down to a 3 piece line up, to suit the new sound. We’ve now got James smashing the drums. He’s a the most talented drummer I’ve ever been in a room with, and we’re all massively excited about getting on the road, and playing new songs for you. See new tour dates:

New Single - Bored in Belgium - 7” / Download

This is our new 7” single. It is made from rubber, holes, oil and grey, all of my favourite materials.

Face A:
Bored In Belgium,
The Woodsmen

Face B:
Bored to Death in Belgium
Death on an Oil Rig

It’s out on 1st February. Preorder it now from HMV and Norman Records. It was due out 25th Jan, but it got stuck on lorry in the snow in Sheffield. This is my favourite record that we have made, I want to touch it all day

The 2 songs on the b-side are from a project we’ve been working on – a drudge version of Love on An Oil Rig…Death on an Oil Rig. There’s another song from this on our myspace.

We’ll be playing live:
27/1 Exeter Cavern
2/2 Leeds Oporto
3/2 Cardiff Buffalo (Launch)
4/2 Bath Moles

We have been writing every day. So far the songs seem to be showing a little too much influence of both Sting and Gorillaz. We will carry on regardless.

At the moment we’re working out tours in Europe – Italy and France in the near future. If any Russian promoters are listening, a short tour in your fine country would be nice, please?

We’ll rid the world of oil and trees soon, just you wait.

Europe was brilliant. Thanks in boot-fuls to everyone who put us on, put us up, put up with us, came, went, clapped, fed us, drank us, touched us appropriately and inappropriately. We made it, we sang, we won, we fell over, we shouted and were forced to return.

Yesterday we played in the museum, directly between a Damien Hirst and a Bridget Riley. It was the best thing ever - a rebirth. cheers to everyone for coming down. if anyone’s got any pictures - send them to us

Tonight we’re playing SWN festival, in Chapter Arts Centre, with Wet Dog, King Alexander and lots of other girls. We’re on at 10pm, but there is a lot of good stuff/noise on 2 stages from early till late.

Next Tuesday we’re at the beautiful Riverside Studios in London – part of the two week long, 6music Fresh on the Net festival - curated by Tom Robinson. We also feature on a Guardian mixtape produced in conjunction with the festival, available FREE from the Guardian Website.

On Thursday we’re at Camden Barfly, with the Chapman Family for an XFM/Xposure night.

That’s it I think for now…xx
